Flamingo Life attended Flamingo Quest hosted by Audubon Everglades 04-30-2022
(Dr. Mark Ian Cook, his wife Sabeena, Audubon Everglades, Wyland and Flamingo Life Artist Rachel Michelle)
Through a partnership with South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD), Audubon Everglades was granted access to Stormwater Treatment Area # 2 (STA 2). Thanks to SFWMD staff Brian Garrett, Natasha Warraich and Dr. Mark Cook for generously volunteering their personal time as to lead us and be our field guide.
This is the first time in 4 years flamingos have been spotted in this area. They were about 400 yards off the berm and were viewed by scope. Dr. Cook educated us on the importance of clean water flowing through the Everglades for the survival of the American Flamingo and many other species of birds.
The quest helped raise money for The Florida Flamingo Working Group. The Florida Flamingo Working Group (FFWG) is a coalition of scientists and conservationists who share a mission to promote conservation and awareness of American Flamingos in Florida and throughout their range.
We were also joined by World Renowned Marine Life Artist and Conservationist Wyland! Through his foundation, he promotes clean water and water conservation. Both, of which, are a very important part of bringing the flamingo population back in the Florida Everglades. The Wyland Foundation is dedicated to promoting, protecting, and preserving the world’s ocean, waterways, and marine life. The foundation encourages environmental awareness through education programs, public arts projects, and community events.
